3 Must Read Books for The Female Young Adult

Let me just start this off by saying that these 3 books I’m about to list are not only for female young adults, but males too.  However, I do think they are especially important for us ladies to read because #girlpower.

1)  Yes Please by Amy Poehler

Why is this a must read book?  Because Amy is one hell of a chick.  She’s fearless, blunt, confident, and isn’t afraid to admit that she was at one point a stoner.  (I’m not condoning this…but honesty is key, and for this….go Amy.)  This book is lol worthy.  You really will be laughing out loud.  I feel like I connect with Amy on a deep, spiritual level. Amy…if you’re reading this: please adopt me.

Some great quotes from Yes Please:

“That is the motto women should constantly repeat over and over again. Good for her! Not for me.”

“The only way we will survive is by being kind. The only way we can get by in this world is through the help we receive from others. No one can do it alone, no matter how great the machines are.”

“People are their most beautiful when they are laughing, crying, dancing, playing, telling the truth, and being chased in a fun way.”

And one I can totally relate to….

“A lot of people don’t know I am always thisfuckingclose to doing some crazy shit.”

2)  Bossypants by Tina Fey

Oh, Tina.  Tina, Tina, Tina.  Another one of my all time favorite SNL cast members (Amy being one of them too…obviously).  What can I say about this book?  It’s fierce.  And funny…as hell.  Tina is an outstanding writer and a fantastic leader.  One of my favorite things about her book is her openness about being a female leader in the workplace and how to handle people.  Unlike her counter part Amy, she was not as much of a wild child…but she has just as interesting and funny stories!  Her description of the first time she auditioned for SNL pretty much made me cry of laughter.

Quote time:

“Some people say, “Never let them see you cry.” I say, if you’re so mad you could just cry, then cry. It terrifies everyone.”

“Do your thing and don’t care if they like it.”

“It is an impressively arrogant move to conclude that just because you don’t like something, it is empirically not good. I don’t like Chinese food, but I don’t write articles trying to prove it doesn’t exist.”

“So, my unsolicited advice to women in the workplace is this. When faced with sexism, or ageism, or lookism, or even really aggressive Buddhism, ask yourself the following question: “Is this person in between me and what I want to do?” If the answer is no, ignore it and move on. Your energy is better used doing your work and outpacing people that way. Then, when you’re in charge, don’t hire the people who were jerky to you.”

3)  Not That Kind Of Girl by Lena Dunham

I know I’ve mentioned this book before, but it’s so good that here I am…mentioning it again…deal with it.  Listen, this book is awesome.  I’ve already reviewed it so I’m not gonna blabber more than I already have…instead, just click here. Lena gets what it’s like being in that awkward phase of “what the hell am I doing” we all reach in our early twenties.  It’s a must read.

A few quotes:

“It’s not brave to do something that doesn’t scare you.”

“You’ve learned a new rule and it’s simple: don’t put yourself in situations you’d like to run away from.”

“The end never comes when you think it will. It’s always ten steps past the worst moment, then a weird turn to the left.”

And the one sentence that describes my current love life:

“I would be a horrible girlfriend at this point in my life, because I’m both needy and unavailable.”

I realize that all three books I wrote about are written by female comedians…but that does not mean that they don’t have some kick ass wisdom, heart, killer advice, and writing talent for days.  They are also really funny.  And I respect funny women.

Leave a comment below and tell me:  Have you read these books and what do you like about them?  And don’t forget to subscribe!
