Now that summer has hit, it’s time to up that sunscreen usage! Since I’m so fair, I use sunscreen daily…even in the winter, just as a precaution. But now that the sun is in full force….I’m pretty much bathing in it! Here’s a couple sunscreen tips from yours truly.
1) Go organic!
I bow down to Coola and their sunscreens. They’re organic, smell yummy (I get the pina colada spray), and they actually have anti-aging antioxidants in it!! They also donate to the Melanoma Research Alliance and Healthy Child Healthy World which makes it even more of a reason to buy! Now…why should you buy organic? Most of the regular store brand sunscreens are extremely toxic and actually increase your risk of cancer and other health issues. Here’s a quote from a research study that EWG conducted: “Our review…shows that some sunscreen ingredients absorb into the blood, and some have toxic effects. Some release skin-damaging free radicals in sunlight, some act like estrogen and disrupt hormones, and several can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation. The FDA has not established rigorous safety standards for sunscreen ingredients.” Always look at labels before you buy!! Here’s a list of ingredients you want to avoid like the plague:
- Para amino benzoic acid
- Octyl salicyclate
- Oxybenzone
- Cinoxate
- Dioxybenzone
- Phenylbenzimidazole
- Homosalate
- Menthyl anthranilate
- Octocrylene
- Methoxycinnamate
- Parabens

2) Cover everything!!!
The 6 spots listed above are actually some of the most sensitive! Now spraying your scalp and your eyelids may seem weird….but think of how horrible that sunburn would be! Always be preventive.
3) Spray it, don’t smother it!!
I’ve always been one to like spraying my sunscreen rather than using lotion. It’s easier to get optimal coverage from the spray than it is lotion….and you don’t wanna ask some random person to make sure your back is lathered in lotion.
4) Reapply!!!
Just because your sunscreen says it’s 50 SPF doesn’t mean you only apply once. I apply every 30 minutes, just to be safe!
Remember, your skin is the largest organ of your body. Cherish it. Take care of it. Love it.
